Got a WhatsApp "HR" job message? 10 checks before you reply
Before you reply to a WhatsApp message offering work from home, check whether you ever applied, who really sent it, and whether it asks for money or documents. Amazon, for example, says it never charges any fee and sends official messages only from Amazon email addresses. Report suspicious messages on Chakshu, and never pay to start.
What a fake HR message looks like
Here is a made-up message that follows the pattern the Ministry of Home Affairs describes for task-based job scams. Tap a number to see why that line is a warning sign.
- "Your profile is selected", but you never applied. A stranger picking you out of nowhere is the first sign.
- Thousands of rupees a day for an hour on your phone. Real pay for simple work is far lower.
- Liking videos and rating places for money is the exact task pattern the government warns about.
- A quick small payment is bait. It comes before the demands for "investment" or fees.
- Moving you to a Telegram group takes you away from WhatsApp's reporting and into a room full of their own people.
- It pushes you to reply fast, and the "batch" is aimed at women at home.
- Asking for Aadhaar and bank details before you know the company. Your documents can be misused.
The government says these scams mostly target retired people, women and young people looking for part-time work. The agent gives small tasks, pays a small commission, then asks for bigger and bigger "investments" that never come back.
10 checks before you reply
- Did you apply? If you never applied to this company, treat the message as an advertisement, not an offer.
- Look at the number. The government advises extra care with unfamiliar numbers that don't start with +91. Scammers abroad often use international numbers.
- A name and logo prove nothing. Anyone can put a company's name and logo on a profile. A Meta verified badge only means Meta checked that business account.
- Find the company yourself. Search for its official careers page instead of using the link in the chat. Amazon, for example, says all its official communication comes from Amazon email addresses.
- Is the pay believable? Offers of thousands a day for simple typing, liking or rating are fake. Compare with what real home-based work pays.
- Is the task liking, rating or reviewing for money? That is the pattern of task-based job fraud.
- Are they moving you to Telegram or a new group? A real employer doesn't need you in a chat group to start work.
- Is anyone asking for money? Registration, training, a laptop, a deposit, GST or "unlocking" pay. Amazon says it never charges a fee at any stage of hiring.
- Are they asking for documents too early? Keep Aadhaar, PAN and bank details until you have a written offer from a company you have checked.
- Before any payment, check the name. If your UPI app shows a random person's name as the receiver, stop. The government warns such accounts may be "mule" accounts used by fraudsters.
WhatsApp settings that protect you
- Open Settings > Privacy > Groups and choose My contacts. Strangers then have to send you an invite instead of adding you to a group.
- Turn on Silence unknown callers (Settings > Privacy > Calls). Calls from unknown numbers are silenced but still show in your call list.
- Run Privacy Checkup (Settings > Privacy) to go through your settings step by step.
- If a stranger adds you to a group, WhatsApp shows a safety overview first. You can leave without opening the chat.
- To stop a sender, tap their name, then Block and report. WhatsApp receives their last few messages to you, and they are not told you reported them.
Where to report a fake job message
If you haven't lost money, report the message on Chakshu in the government's Sanchar Saathi portal. It accepts calls, SMS and WhatsApp messages, and asks you to report within 30 days. In 2025 people filed 58,560 Chakshu reports in the category that covers fake job, lottery, gift and loan offers.

If an offer uses one of these names and asks you for money, it breaks the company's own stated rules. That alone tells you it is fake.

How do I know if a WhatsApp HR message is real?
Check that you applied, that the company's own website lists the job, and that nobody asks you for money or documents early. Contact the company through its official website, not the number that messaged you.
Do real companies send job offers on WhatsApp?
Some recruiters may call or message first, but offers and official letters come from company email addresses and websites. Amazon says its official communication happens only through Amazon email addresses.
What does the blue tick on a WhatsApp business account mean?
It means Meta verified that business account. A company name and logo without the badge prove nothing, and even with it you should still never pay to get a job.
How do I report a WhatsApp job scam in India?
Block and report the sender inside WhatsApp, then report the number or message on Chakshu in the Sanchar Saathi portal. If you lost money, call 1930 and file at cybercrime.gov.in.
Why do they ask me to join a Telegram group?
To move you somewhere they control, surrounded by fake members who post their "earnings". A real job doesn't start in a Telegram group.
Why did I get a message from a +84 or +62 number?
Many scam messages come from numbers outside India. The government advises caution with unfamiliar numbers that don't start with +91.
