Real work-from-home jobs never ask you to pay: not for registration, training, a kit or a deposit. In India this work includes chat and email support, data entry and checking, writing, transcription and tutoring. Look for it on the government's free National Career Service portal, on company websites, and on job sites where you apply to a named company.
The one rule: the employer pays you
The government's own job portal says it plainly. The National Career Service (NCS) doesn't charge any fee at any stage, and it tells job seekers not to pay fees to employers either.
If an offer asks you for money first, for any reason, it is not a job. Walk away, even if they already paid you a small amount.
Wanting work you can do from home is common and sensible. In a study of women in Mumbai, published by the World Bank's research blog, 56% took up a home-based job when it was offered, compared with 27% when the same kind of job was in an office. Fake job offers often target women at home for the same reason.

Real kinds of home-based work, and what they pay
These figures are what people doing the job full-time say they earn, collected by PayScale. They are averages across India, not a promise. Part-time work pays less, in proportion to your hours.

There is also newer work, such as checking the answers of AI chatbots and labelling data. It asks for careful reading and good judgement more than for any degree.
Where to look (for free)
- Register on the government's National Career Service portal. It is free for job seekers, and NCS has promoted work-from-home openings on it. Its helpline is 1514.
- Go straight to company websites. Search for the company name and "careers", and apply on its own site.
- Use well-known job sites where you apply to a named company. Check that company yourself before you share documents.

Scammers copy real names too. Fake "NCS registration" demands of ₹550 to ₹1,000 have been reported. NCS itself never charges.
Learn for free while you look

- Practise typing and simple spreadsheets on your phone or a laptop. Speed and accuracy matter for most home-based jobs.
- Read and write a little English every day. Many jobs need only simple, clear English.
