Kinds of online tutoring that pay
Four kinds pay from home: maths for children, spoken English, your language for learners abroad, and your own students.
Families keep paying for extra classes. About 27% of school students in India took private coaching in 2025, according to the government's education survey: 30.7% in cities and 25.5% in villages. A growing share of those classes happen over video, which is what makes tutoring possible from home.
| Kind | What you do | What you need | Who hires |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maths for children | Small online classes for school children, using the company's lessons | Maths up to Class 10, a laptop | Cuemath |
| Spoken English | Live English classes for school students | A degree, very good English and an English test score or teaching certificate | PlanetSpark |
| Your language for learners abroad | One-to-one lessons in Hindi or another language you speak well | Clear speech, a laptop with a webcam | Preply, italki |
| School subjects for children near you | Homework help and revision over video, for families who know you | A subject you know well, a phone or laptop | You, with families in your area |
Teaching is one of the kinds of work HerWorkCircle sends too, as online tuition, so we see what families ask for: patience, regular timings and a short update to the parent after each class.

What online tutors earn
Tutors in India average about ₹17,400 a month, and platforms keep a share, so check the cut before you start.
Pay depends on how many students you teach, and on who sets the fee. Indeed India puts the average tutor salary at about ₹17,400 a month (120 salaries, updated August 2026). That is an average for tutors of every kind, not a promise for online work.
| Who | What they say about pay | Their cut or cost |
|---|---|---|
| Cuemath | Teachers can make as much as ₹40,000 a month, depending on how many students they teach | No fee to apply |
| PlanetSpark | Pay is not published; ask for it in writing before you start | No fee mentioned |
| Preply | You set your own price per lesson | Keeps all of the first trial lesson with each new student, then 33%, falling to 18% as you teach more |
| italki | You set your own prices and hours | A commission on lessons; check the current rate when you apply |
| Your own students | You and the parents agree the fee | Nothing, but you find the families yourself |
Preply and italki pay to PayPal, Payoneer or a similar account in your own name, which then reaches your bank. A first trial lesson on Preply earns you nothing, so count it as the cost of meeting a new student.
Try a demo class
Every real platform judges you on a demo class: can you explain one idea simply to a child?
Before you get students, platforms watch you teach. PlanetSpark asks every new teacher for a demo class, and Cuemath tests your maths and your communication. Here is what they look for. Read the child's question and both answers, pick the better one, then see how a teacher would score them.
A 9 year old asks in class: "Why is one half bigger than one quarter? Four is bigger than two!"
Tap the answer you think is better.
See the rubric
| Criterion | Better | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Builds understanding | A | A shows why with something the child knows. B gives a rule to memorise, which is easy to forget. |
| Checks the child understood | A | A ends with a question, so the tutor hears whether it worked. |
| Kind to the child | A | A starts by calling it a good question. B moves straight to the rule. |
| Short | B | B is shorter, but a short answer the child can't use is not a better one. |
A is better. It explains with an everyday example and checks back with the child. That is exactly what a demo class is judged on.
Where to apply, without paying anything
Apply on the platform's own website: Cuemath, PlanetSpark, Preply and italki charge nothing to apply.
What would you like to teach?
Apply to Cuemath
- You need to have studied maths up to Class 10, a laptop and a steady internet connection.
- Classes are about 55 minutes with up to 6 students. Cuemath's page also asks for space at home for 6 students, so ask how your classes will run.
- Sign up on Cuemath's tutor hiring site, then take a communication test, a maths test and an interview, followed by training.
- Applying is free. If anyone asks you to pay to join Cuemath, it is not Cuemath.
Apply to PlanetSpark
- PlanetSpark asks for a bachelor's degree, excellent communication and a good TOEFL, IELTS or GRE score, or a TEFL, CELTA or TESOL certificate.
- Apply on its teacher page, then give a demo class.
- New teachers join its teacher programme and online training sessions.
- Pay is not published, so ask for the rate and the class timings in writing before you start.
Make a profile on Preply or italki
- Preply needs no certificate or teaching experience, but you need a laptop or computer, a webcam and a microphone.
- Write a short profile and record an introduction video of up to 2 minutes. Preply says reviews take a few working days.
- Set a price you can grow from. Tutors from India already teach Hindi on Preply.
- Set up PayPal or Payoneer in your own name to receive money.
Teach your own students over video
- Tell families you know, your building or your child's school group, which subject and classes you teach.
- Offer one free trial class so the parent can see how you teach.
- Agree the fee, the days and the timing in a message, so nobody is confused later.
- Take payment by UPI to your own account, monthly in advance, and send a short update to the parent after each class.
Fee traps: fake tutor jobs and paid leads
A tutor job that asks you to pay is fake; a site selling student leads is an ad you pay for.
Fake job rackets ask for money in small steps. One busted by Noida police in 2022 took a ₹1,000 "registration" fee from job seekers, then ₹9,900 for "document verification". In December 2023 the government blocked more than 100 websites used for task-based part-time job fraud.
- A registration or training fee. Money to join, get a certificate or be shown to parents.
- A message out of nowhere. A teaching job offered on WhatsApp or Telegram before you applied anywhere.
- No demo class, no test. Real platforms watch you teach before they give you students.
- Pay that sounds too high. Thousands a day for an hour of teaching, with no students yet.
- Tasks that aren't teaching. Liking videos or rating products, called "tutor tasks".
Any one of these: it is not a teaching job. Don't pay to get students.
Some tutor directories are free to join but sell coins or monthly plans to contact parents. That is not a scam, but it is an advert you pay for: many leads never become students. Pay only what you can afford to lose.
If you have already paid someone, see how to report a job scam.
Teaching children safely online
Keep classes on the platform, never share your personal number, and ask a parent to stay near young children.
- Stay on the platform. Classes, messages and payments on the platform protect you if there is a dispute.
- Keep your number private. Use the platform's messages, or a separate number for your own students.
- A parent nearby. For young children, ask that a parent stays in the room or checks in during class.
- A plain background. Sit in good light, in a quiet corner, and close other tabs before you share your screen.
- Leave if it feels wrong. End any class where an adult behaves badly, and report the account to the platform.
How to start this week
This week: pick one subject, practise a five-minute explanation, and apply to two platforms.
- Pick one subject and one age group you are sure about.
- Practise explaining one idea in five minutes, out loud, as if to a child. Record yourself on your phone and watch it back.
- Apply to two places from the list above, on their own websites.
- Keep a simple record of what each class earns. Tutoring income is taxable, and a platform may deduct tax at source once your yearly earnings cross a limit, so keep your PAN updated and ask a tax adviser how to file.
If you would rather have checked work sent to you, online tuition included, take the free HerWorkCircle skill check. A person on our team reads your answers and sends work that fits your hours. We never ask you to pay.
