Why finding the right work is hard, and not your fault
Most housework in India is still done by women. The government's Time Use Survey 2024 found women spend about 289 minutes a day on unpaid domestic work, compared with 88 minutes for men, plus 137 minutes on caring for family members.
It shows up in jobs too. In the government's 2025 labour survey, 40% of women aged 15 and over were in the labour force, compared with 79% of men. Among women who were not, 44% gave childcare or home-making as the main reason.

How much time can you give on most days?
Short, flexible tasks
- Checking data or AI answers in small batches, often possible on a phone.
- Replying to customer emails or chats in a fixed slot, such as early morning or after the children sleep.
- Online tutoring for one or two students, at a time that suits you both.
Regular part-time work
- Data entry and checking for a company, with a daily target instead of fixed hours.
- Writing and editing: product descriptions, simple articles, translations into your language.
- Chat support shifts of a few hours, usually with a laptop and steady internet.
Close to a full working day
- Customer support or back-office roles with a company, often with training and a fixed shift.
- Virtual assistant work for a small business: email, bookings, documents.
- Content writing or transcription with a steady weekly volume.

A real employer tells you what device, internet and English level the work needs before you start. They don't sell you the phone, laptop or software.
The packing job trap
Pen, pencil, candle and agarbatti "packing jobs from home" are among the most common fake offers aimed at housewives. You are asked for a registration fee or a deposit for the "material", and the work or the money never comes.
Hindustan Pencils, the maker of Nataraj and Apsara pencils, has publicly said it does not give pencil packing work from home, that its pencils are packed by machine, and that nobody is allowed to collect deposits in its name. Videos showing police officers "approving" these jobs have been found to be edited fakes.
Any home job that asks you to pay a deposit, a registration fee or a "material charge" is a scam. Walk away, even if they show a company name, a logo or a video.

Where to find genuine work for free
- The government's National Career Service has a work from home jobs page. It is free at every step. Still check each employer yourself before you share documents.
- Company websites: search for the company name with "careers", and apply on its own site.
- Well-known job sites where you apply to a named company that you can look up.

Two things people confuse with job portals
- e-Shram is not a job portal. It is the government's register of unorganised workers, which gives you a number linked to social security schemes. Registering is useful, but it won't bring you a job offer.
- Self-help groups under the government's rural livelihoods mission (DAY-NRLM) help women start small home-based businesses with training and credit. That is a business path, not a job.
