EMEA shift timings in India: UK and Europe hours in IST

Short answer

What an EMEA shift means

EMEA stands for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Companies in India use "EMEA shift" for work done for clients or offices in that part of the world, so the shift follows their office day. Because India is ahead of all of them, their morning is your afternoon, and their evening is your night.

Job listings use a few names for these shifts. In listings we checked on Indeed India in October 2026, EMEA shifts started between 11 AM and 2 PM India time and ran about nine hours.

Shift names you will see in job listings (examples from Indeed India, October 2026)
Name in the listingFollows the office day inTimings seen in listings (IST)
EMEA shiftEurope, the Middle East or Africa11:30 AM start, 12:30 PM to 9:30 PM, 2 PM to 11 PM
UK shiftLondon and the rest of the UK12 PM to 9 PM; many give no hours at all
Europe or European shiftParis, Berlin, Amsterdam and other European cities10:30 AM to 7:30 PM, 11 AM to 8 PM
Afternoon shiftOften used for the same EMEA hours12:30 PM to 9:30 PM

Always read the exact hours in the listing, and ask whether they change in October and March. Some listings give only "UK shift", which can mean anything from a short overlap to a full late shift.

Pick where the office is, the time of year and when its office day starts (8, 9 or 10 AM there). You will see the shift on India's clock, for today's date or for winter and summer.

Why your shift moves twice a year

India keeps the same time all year: India Standard Time is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of UTC. The UK and the European Union move their clocks forward on the last Sunday of March and back on the last Sunday of October, at the same moment. So a UK or Europe shift is one hour earlier in India time in summer, and one hour later in winter.

When UK and Europe clocks change, and what it does to your shift
DateClocks in the UK and EUYour UK or Europe shift in India time
Sunday 25 October 2026Go back one hourStarts and ends one hour later
Sunday 28 March 2027Go forward one hourStarts and ends one hour earlier
Sunday 31 October 2027Go back one hourStarts and ends one hour later

The UAE, Saudi Arabia and South Africa don't change their clocks, so shifts for offices there stay the same all year. Egypt does change, on its own dates. The EU has discussed ending clock changes since 2018, but no decision has been taken, so plan for both changes every year.

If your shift is fixed in the office's time, your India hours move in October and March. If it is fixed in India time, your overlap with the office moves instead. Ask which one it is before you join.

Which shift fits your day?

When are you free to work?

Look at Middle East shifts

  1. A 9 AM to 6 PM day in Dubai is 10:30 AM to 7:30 PM in India, all year.
  2. Saudi Arabia is one hour later: 11:30 AM to 8:30 PM.
  3. You finish before 9 PM, so evenings with family stay free.

Look at Europe and EMEA shifts

  1. 12:30 PM to 9:30 PM is one of the most common EMEA timings.
  2. A Central Europe shift is 12:30 PM to 9:30 PM in summer and 1:30 PM to 10:30 PM in winter.
  3. Ask whether the hours move in October and March.

Look at UK shifts

  1. A UK office day is 1:30 PM to 10:30 PM in India in summer, and 2:30 PM to 11:30 PM in winter.
  2. Mornings stay free for children, cooking and errands.
  3. Plan your sleep: you may finish close to midnight in winter.

Look at part-time overlap roles

  1. Some remote listings ask for only a few hours that overlap with the UK.
  2. Agree the exact hours in India time, in writing, before you start.
  3. Check that the pay for those hours is written down too.

Late hours: your rights, cabs and sleep

Under the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020, which came into force on 21 November 2025, women may work before 6 AM and after 7 PM with their consent, subject to conditions on safety, holidays and working hours set by the government. The detailed conditions come from central and state rules, so ask the employer which ones it follows.

For office-based EMEA shifts, some listings mention a cab for late shifts. Working from home removes the late journey, but agree your hours, breaks and days off in writing all the same.

There is no national law in India that requires a shift allowance. Some employers pay one for late or rotating shifts, so ask about it at the offer stage and get it in writing.

  • Keep your bedroom dark when you sleep after a late shift: heavy curtains or an eye mask help.
  • Use tea or coffee only now and then, not to stay awake every night.
  • Keep your work area well lit during the shift, and switch to softer light after you finish.
  • Tell the family your working hours, so the evening rush doesn't land on your shift.

Finding a genuine work from home EMEA or UK shift job

Remote jobs with UK or EMEA shifts exist: sales support, recruitment, tutoring and customer support roles all appear in listings. Many of them are hybrid or move to an office later, so check the location line, not only the title.

  1. Apply to companies you can look up, on their own careers page or on a job site where the employer is named.
  2. Check the shift hours in India time, and whether they move in October and March.
  3. Ask how pay works for the late hours, and whether there is a shift allowance.
  4. Never pay a fee, deposit or "training charge" to get a shift job. A real employer pays you.
