AI training jobs from home in India: real work or scam?
Real AI training jobs exist for people in India: rating and comparing AI answers, writing prompts, and recording or transcribing Indian languages. Real platforms test you first and pay for accepted work, often a few dollars an hour for language work, with no fixed hours. Any "AI job" that asks you to pay is a scam.

What AI training work really is
AI chat tools learn from people. For InstructGPT, the research that led to ChatGPT, OpenAI hired about 40 contractors through Upwork and Scale AI, and each first passed a screening test. They wrote questions, wrote the ideal answer, and ranked the AI's answers from best to worst. That is still the heart of the work today.
| Task | What you do | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Rating answers | Compare two AI answers and pick the better one, with reasons | Careful reading, clear English |
| Writing prompts and answers | Write a question, then the ideal answer to it | Good writing, often a subject you know well |
| Fact checking | Check whether what the AI wrote is true | Patience and a habit of checking sources |
| Indian-language work | Rate, write or speak in Hindi, Tamil and other languages | Fluency in the language and in English |
| Recording and transcription | Record your voice, or type out what you hear | A quiet room and a good ear |
Checking data and AI answers is one of the main kinds of work at HerWorkCircle too, so we see what the real work asks for: it is closer to careful editing than to typing.
Try a real AI rating task
This is what a rating task looks like. Read the question and both answers, pick the better one, then see how a written guide scores them.
Explain what a UPI PIN is to someone using UPI for the first time. Keep it short and simple.
Tap the answer you think is better.
See the rubric
| Criterion | Better | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Correct facts | A | B says you need the PIN to receive money. You don't, and scammers use exactly this lie. |
| Safety | A | A warns never to share the PIN, even with someone claiming to be the bank. |
| Simple words | Tie | Both use short sentences a new user can follow. |
| Length | B | B is shorter, but a short wrong answer is worse than a slightly longer right one. |
A is better. B sounds fine but contains a dangerous mistake. Catching mistakes like this is what AI training pays for.
Where real AI training work comes from
These are examples of real platforms and employers with work open to people in India, as their own pages showed in October 2026. Rates and openings change often, and listing them here is not a recommendation.
| Who | What their India pages show | How they pay |
|---|---|---|
| Outlier (Scale AI) | Tamil work up to $5.50 an hour, Hindi voice work up to $7.50, expert roles more | PayPal, Airtm or bank transfer |
| Mindrift (formerly Toloka) | Open to any country; each task shows its reward before you start | Payoneer or PayPal, twice a month |
| Mercor | Hindi roles at $7 to $11 and $18 to $22 an hour, closed within weeks | Weekly, by Wise or Stripe |
| DataAnnotation | Hindi and other Indian-language specialist roles listed; no country list published | PayPal |
| Shaip | Recording and transcription in Indian languages, apply by form | Not stated on the page |
| iMerit | Full-time jobs in India, with trainees starting at $150 to $200 a month | Monthly salary |
Indian-language work usually pays far less than expert work in maths, coding or finance, which asks for a degree or professional experience. A 2023 Thomson Reuters Foundation report found firms in small Indian towns paying annotation workers about $200 to $300 a month.
Why the work can stop without warning
Most platforms promise no minimum hours: work arrives as invitations when a project needs your skills. Whole countries have been cut off before. In March 2024, Scale AI shut its Remotasks platform in Kenya, Nigeria and Pakistan, and Kenyan workers got no notice. In 2025, Scale cut hundreds of contractors after some clients paused projects.
- Treat it as extra income, not a salary you can plan your month around.
- Keep more than one source of work, and save your best task feedback in case an account closes.
- Read each project's guidelines fully. Quality scores decide who gets the next invitation.
How the fake "AI jobs" work
Scammers copy the words of real AI work. Here is a made-up message built from the pattern in government warnings about task-based job fraud. Tap a number to see why that line is a warning sign.
- Real AI work pays by the hour of accepted work, never a fixed daily amount, and it starts with an application on the platform's own website.
- Real platforms always test you first, with a skills test and an ID check.
- A small first payment is the hook. It makes the next step feel safe.
- This is the trap. No real AI training work asks you to pay to get tasks.
- A group run by a "mentor" keeps you inside a space the scammers control.
In December 2023 the government blocked more than 100 websites used for task-based job and investment fraud: victims did small tasks like rating places, were paid a little, then deposited more and lost it. In the US, reports of these task scams rose from about 5,000 in all of 2023 to about 20,000 in the first half of 2024, according to the Federal Trade Commission.

How to read this
- No warning signs so far: Still apply only through the platform's own website, and never pay anything.
- Be careful: Look the company up with the word "scam", and check that the job is listed on its official website.
- This looks like a scam: Stop replying and don't pay. If you have lost money, call 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in.
If you already paid, our guide on getting money back after a UPI scam shows what to do first, and how to report a job scam covers the complaint.
How to start safely
- Apply only on the platform's own website, never through a link someone sent you.
- Expect a skills test and an ID check. Take the test slowly: some can be taken only once.
- Set up PayPal or Payoneer in your own name, linked to your own bank account.
- Keep a record of what you earn. Money from foreign platforms counts as income in India, so ask a tax adviser how to file it. GST registration is needed only if your services cross ₹20 lakh a year.
- Download the proof of each foreign payment your account gives you, such as PayPal's monthly FIRA, and keep it safe.
If you would rather have checked work sent to you, matched to your hours, take the free HerWorkCircle skill check. Checking AI answers is one of the kinds of work we send.
