Online earning apps without investment: real or fake?
Some earning apps are real but pay small amounts, often as store credit: Google Opinion Rewards, for example, pays in Google Play credit. Apps that pay a little first, then ask you to deposit money for bigger tasks or to withdraw your earnings, are scams. A real app never asks you to pay to get paid.

How to read this
- No warning signs so far: Real earning apps pay small amounts. Keep your expectations modest and never share bank details inside the app.
- Be careful: Look the app up with the word "scam", read its Play Store reviews, and never put money into it.
- This looks like a scam: An app that asks you to pay, or shows two or more of these signs, is not a way to earn. Uninstall it, and if you paid, call 1930.
What a fake earning app looks like
Here is a made-up app screen built from the pattern in government warnings about task-based fraud. Tap a number to see why that line is a warning sign.
- A balance on the screen is just a number. Until money reaches your bank account, it isn't yours.
- The withdrawal limit sits just above your balance, so you keep working or paying to reach it.
- Rating hotels or liking videos for money is the task pattern the government warns about.
- Paying for a "VIP" level is the trap itself. Deposits like this are where people lose money.
- Needing friends to join before you can withdraw spreads the scam to people you know.
- Moving you to a Telegram group takes you somewhere the scammers control.
In December 2023 the government blocked more than 100 websites used for task-based part-time job and investment frauds. Victims were paid a small commission first, then asked to invest more, and then their deposits were frozen. The ads used phrases like "ghar baithe kamai" (earn from home), and the targets included women, retired people and young job seekers.
What real earning apps pay
Real survey and small-task apps exist, and they pay small amounts. Google Opinion Rewards is available in India to people aged 18 and over, and it rewards you with Google Play credit for answering short surveys. That credit buys apps and books, not groceries.
Treat survey and task apps as pocket money at most. They won't replace a salary, and none of them should ever ask you to pay.
If you want steady income from home, real work with a company you can check pays far more. See work from home jobs without investment for what real home-based work pays.
When an "earning app" is really a loan, trading or gaming app
| If the app offers | Check this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Loans | RBI's directory of digital lending apps | Genuine loan apps are run by lenders RBI regulates, and Google Play requires them to be on this list in India |
| Trading or forex | RBI's Alert List of unauthorised forex platforms | RBI names platforms that aren't allowed to offer forex trading, and says the list is not complete |
| Stock tips or "advisers" | SEBI's register of advisers | SEBI warns about unregistered "advisers" on WhatsApp, Telegram and apps |
| Games for money | Nothing: avoid them | Online money games and their ads are banned in India from 1 May 2026 |
| Deposits or schemes | RBI's Sachet portal | Check whether an entity may take deposits, and complain if it took yours |
What the government and Google are doing
By 30 June 2026, the government's cybercrime centre had blocked 3,718 mobile apps, including fraudulent loan apps, according to a written reply in Parliament reported by ANI. Google says Play Protect has blocked nearly 6 crore risky install attempts in India since October 2024, stopping more than 2.2 lakh harmful apps.
Blocking helps, but new apps appear all the time. Checking an app yourself, before you put in any money or details, is still the best protection.
How to report a fake earning app
