You can start some real work with only a phone, such as AI data tasks like recording speech in your own language. Much office work still needs a computer, so read the device line in every job ad before you apply. And never install a job app sent as a file on WhatsApp.

Many women have a phone but no computer

About 1 in 4 women who took our skill check had no computer at all, so phone-first work matters.

When women take the HerWorkCircle skill check, we ask what devices they have. Nearly every one has her own phone. About 1 in 4 has no computer at all, and some more share one with the family.

Across India, the latest national family health survey (NFHS-6) found that 63.6% of women own a mobile phone and 64.3% have used the internet.

In 2023, Marketplace reported that Karya aims to pay its workers about $5 an hour, more than the market rate. Check how to join, and the current terms, with Karya itself.

Read the device line in every job ad. "Own laptop or PC with internet" means a phone will not do, however keen you are.

Never install a job app sent on WhatsApp

Job apps shared as files on WhatsApp have been used to compromise phones; install apps only from the Play Store.

On a phone, the biggest danger is often the app, not the job. In May 2024, Deccan Chronicle reported from Hyderabad that WhatsApp groups were spreading harmful APK files, installable app files, disguised as job offers. Once installed, such files can compromise the security of your personal details.
