How to get money back from a UPI scam: what really works
If you were scammed, call 1930 at once: it can ask banks to hold the money before it moves on. Then report it in your UPI app and to your bank. Paid the wrong UPI ID? Ask the person to return it and complain to your bank. A UPI payment can't be cancelled after you enter your PIN.

Start here: what happened?
Pick the one that matches what happened
You paid a scammer yourself
- Call 1930 now. The helpline can alert the banks the money went through so they can hold it.
- Report it in your UPI app. In PhonePe, tap Help, then the transaction, then report a fraud. In Google Pay, contact your bank's helpline first.
- Call your bank and give the 12-digit UPI transaction ID. Ask them to block further payments.
- File the full complaint at cybercrime.gov.in with the acknowledgement number from 1930.
- Keep screenshots, the scammer's UPI ID and phone number, and every transaction ID.
Someone used your account without you
- Call your bank right away and block UPI and cards. Report within 3 working days if you can: that keeps your loss at zero under RBI rules when the fault was elsewhere.
- Call 1930 as well, and file at cybercrime.gov.in.
- Ask the bank for a complaint number. It must credit the amount to you (shadow credit) within 10 working days of your report.
- Change your UPI PIN and check which apps and devices are linked to your bank account.
A mistake, not a scam
- If you know the person, ask them politely to send it back. The money comes back only if they agree.
- Complain to your bank with the UPI transaction ID. Your bank can ask the receiver's bank to request the money back.
- Raise a complaint with NPCI too, within 3 days if you can, or call NPCI on 1800-120-1740.
- If someone "returns" more than you sent, or asks you to pay a fee to get it back, it is a scam.
A failed payment
- Wait a day. For a failed payment to a person, the money must come back by the next day (RBI calls this T+1).
- For a failed payment to a shop or merchant, it must come back within 5 days.
- If it is late, your bank owes you ₹100 for every day of delay. Raise it in your UPI app and with your bank.
Speed matters most when you were scammed. Money that has already moved through several accounts is much harder to hold.
Find your UPI transaction ID first
Every step asks for the 12-digit UPI transaction ID (also called the UPI reference or UTR). Open the payment in your UPI app's history; it is on the transaction details screen. Your bank's SMS for the payment usually shows it too. Take a screenshot before you do anything else.
Who to complain to, and in what order
| Step | Where | When to move on |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Your UPI app | Help or support inside GPay, PhonePe or your app | If it isn't solved |
| 2. Your bank | Branch, helpline or the bank's complaint form, with the transaction ID | If there is no reply in 30 days, or you aren't satisfied |
| 3. NPCI | NPCI's UPI complaint page, or 1800-120-1740 | If it is still not solved |
| 4. RBI Ombudsman | cms.rbi.org.in or call 14448; it is free | File within 90 days of the bank's reply or its 30 days ending |
For scams, run steps 1 and 2 at the same time as 1930. Don't wait for the app to reply before calling the helpline.
The rules that protect you
| Rule | What it says | Covers scams? |
|---|---|---|
| Failed transactions (RBI, 2019) | Person-to-person UPI: back by the next day; merchant: within 5 days; then ₹100 a day | No, only technical failures |
| Unauthorised transactions (RBI, 2017) | Zero loss if a third party caused it and you report within 3 working days; bank decides within 90 days | Only when you didn't make the payment |
| Digital fraud compensation (RBI, from 1 January 2027) | A one-time payment of 85% of the loss, up to ₹25,000, for losses up to ₹50,000, if reported quickly to your bank and 1930 or the portal | Reports differ on payments you were tricked into making; ask your bank |
| RBI Ombudsman (scheme of 2026) | Free complaint after your bank fails to resolve it; awards up to ₹30 lakh | Covers how your bank handled the complaint |
How held money comes back
When 1930 acts fast, the bank that received the money can put a hold (a lien) on it. That doesn't mean it returns to you the same day. Held money is released after the bank's own process, or on instructions from the police or a court. Reports of the government's 2024 procedure say banks can return smaller held amounts, under ₹50,000, without a court order; larger amounts may need one.
Up to 30 June 2026, more than ₹11,158 crore was saved through the 1930 system across more than 32.8 lakh complaints, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs. Reporting fast is what makes that possible.
Nobody genuine charges a fee to get your money back. Anyone who calls offering "recovery" for a payment, even claiming to be police, bank staff or a lawyer, is running a second scam.
After you report
- Write down every complaint number: 1930, cybercrime.gov.in, the app, the bank and NPCI.
- Follow up with your bank in writing if 30 days pass without an answer, then go to the RBI Ombudsman.
- Tell one person you trust. These scams are run by organised groups, and being cheated is not your fault.

Questions
Can I get my money back after a UPI scam?
Sometimes. If you call 1930 quickly, the bank that received the money can hold it, and it can be returned later through the bank, police or a court. The longer you wait, the harder it gets.
Can I cancel a UPI payment?
No. A UPI payment can't be cancelled after you enter your PIN. For a wrong payment, ask the receiver to return it and complain to your bank.
How do I get money back from a wrong UPI ID?
Contact the person if you can, then complain to your bank with the transaction ID, and to NPCI on 1800-120-1740. The money returns only if the receiver agrees.
What if money was deducted but the UPI payment failed?
It must come back by the next day for a payment to a person, or within 5 days for a merchant. After that, your bank owes ₹100 for each day of delay.
Does Google Pay or PhonePe refund scam payments?
The apps can raise your complaint, but they can't reverse a payment you approved. Call 1930 and your bank, and follow the complaint steps above.
Where do I complain if my bank doesn't help?
To the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in or on 14448, free of charge, within 90 days of the bank's reply or of 30 days passing without one.
