HerWorkCircle vs Athena: one assistant, or a managed team?

Short answer

Choose Athena for one dedicated full-time executive assistant in your time zone, at $3,000 a month on a 12-month commitment or $3,600 after an initial 90-day commitment. Choose HerWorkCircle for repeat, rule-based batch work such as data checking and catalogs, done by a managed team in India that checks every piece and prices the work up front.

How to read this
  • A managed team is likely the better fit: Repeat, rule-based batch work is what we do. Start with a small trial batch at a price agreed up front.
  • Athena is likely the better fit: For a leader's own inbox, calendar and day to day, one dedicated assistant who learns how you work is a strong fit.
  • Try both on one small task: Many teams use both: an assistant for the leader's own tasks, and a team for batch work. Try the batch on a small task first.

A side is called when it leads by two or more answers. Each question has one answer that fits each option.

Nothing you answer is saved or sent. It is a rule of thumb, and it leans to Athena as readily as to us.

How Athena works

Athena (athena.com) matches a leader with one dedicated, full-time executive assistant, which it calls an Executive Partner. It says the assistant works with you and no one else, and that this differs from a traditional virtual assistant, which Athena describes as narrower in scope.

  • You start with an intake survey and a 60-minute onboarding call. Athena then matches you with an assistant, and you have a kickoff call with the assistant and a partnership manager. Athena puts the whole process at one to two weeks.
  • The assistant works 40 hours a week. Tasks include inbox, calendar, travel, research, invoices, meeting notes and personal errands.
  • Assistants are employed by Athena, with devices, tools and training provided. Athena says candidates go through personality, cognitive and English tests, training on real tasks, and identity and background checks.
  • If your assistant is on leave, Athena assigns a temporary one for your top-priority tasks. If a match isn't working, it says it will try to resolve concerns first and then rematch you.
  • Athena states that it holds SOC 2 Type II certification and that every assistant signs an NDA.

Athena's own pages differ in places: for example, its FAQ and pricing pages give different onboarding times. Check its current pages before you decide.

What an assistant costs, and what it covers

Athena's FAQ lists two options. The arithmetic below is ours:

Athena's published prices for one full-time assistant (40 hours a week), with our arithmetic
OptionPer monthPer yearPer hour worked, roughly
12-month commitment, billed monthly$3,000$36,000$17
After an initial 90-day commitment, billed monthly$3,600$43,200$21

That price buys one person's full working week, which suits tasks that follow a leader around: reading the inbox, managing a calendar, booking travel. For batch work, the price of capacity is different. A task that needs several people at once means several assistants, and Athena itself advises a second assistant when yours regularly works past 40 hours.

We don't publish a rate card, because the price depends on the task and the volume. On the first call you get a clear price for a trial batch, per piece or per hour, and a clear price again before anything bigger starts. There is no subscription and no seat per person.

Where Athena is the better choice

  • A leader's own day. One person who knows your inbox, calendar and preferences is built for that.
  • Working in your time zone, with the assistant on your schedule by default.
  • A single point of contact who becomes familiar with how you work.
  • A provider that employs and manages the assistant, with a partnership manager and a documented security approach.
  • Personal and professional errands, such as travel, household tasks and hiring support, alongside the work.

Athena also reports scale about itself: a team of over 3,500 people worldwide and more than 3,000 leaders supported.

Where HerWorkCircle fits better

  • Repeat work with clear rules: checking and cleaning data, product catalogs, reviewing chatbot and AI answers, data labelling, research and lists, written support, bookkeeping entries.
  • Pay for the work, not a seat: one agreed price per piece or per hour, with no subscription.
  • A second look: every piece is checked by our team before you see it.
  • Continuity: you hire a team, so work continues when one person is away.
  • A way in with no long commitment: a small trial batch first, then more as you see the result.
  • Fair work: an active and growing circle of women across India, who passed our skill check for that kind of work, work the hours they chose, and are paid fairly and on time.

Using both

These are different tools. A leader's personal assistant and a team for batch work don't compete, and many teams keep both.

  1. Keep an assistant for the tasks that follow one person around.
  2. Pick the task that repeats in batches, and write it down: a sample of the input, a finished example, and a few good and bad results. Our brief builder helps.
  3. Book a free 20-minute call and agree the price of a small trial batch.
  4. Compare the result, the review time and the total cost, then decide what to scale.

Questions

What is a good Athena alternative for batch work?

For repeat, rule-based batch work such as data checking, catalogs or reviewing AI answers, a managed team like HerWorkCircle prices the work per piece or per hour and checks every piece before delivery. For a leader's own inbox, calendar and personal tasks, a dedicated assistant like Athena's is usually the better fit.

How much does Athena cost?

Athena's FAQ lists $3,000 a month with a 12-month commitment, or $3,600 a month after an initial 90-day commitment, for one full-time assistant working 40 hours a week. Check its pricing page for current terms.

Where are Athena's assistants based?

Athena says its assistants are located overseas and work on a schedule set by your needs, and its About page names communities in Colombia, Guatemala, Kenya and the Philippines. India is not listed.

Is an executive assistant or a managed team better for data work?

Data checking, catalogs and review work come in batches with written rules, which suits a team that can share the load and check the output. One dedicated assistant is built for the varied tasks of one leader.

Does HerWorkCircle need a subscription?

No. You get one price for a trial batch on the first call, per piece or per hour, and a clear price before anything bigger starts.
