How Upwork works for clients
Upwork is a marketplace for hiring freelancers. You post a job and invite or receive proposals, or buy a fixed-scope service from the Project Catalog, then work with each freelancer under a contract.
- Two self-serve plans: Basic, for occasional project work, and Business Plus, for ongoing work at scale. Both are free to start.
- Hourly contracts run on a weekly billing cycle. The freelancer's desktop Time Tracker records activity and takes several screenshots per hour for the client's Work Diary.
- Fixed-price contracts use milestones that you fund up front. Payment is released when you approve, or automatically after 14 days if you don't respond.
- Hourly Protection covers time logged with the Time Tracker, not manual time. You can dispute hours within five days after the billing period ends.
- Talent badges show track record: Top Rated (top 10%), Top Rated Plus (top 3%) and Expert-Vetted (top 1%, shown to Business Plus and enterprise clients).
- For 24 months from the start of an Upwork relationship, payments with that freelancer must go through Upwork, unless you pay a conversion fee.
What Upwork fees add up to
On the Basic plan, Upwork's help center describes a marketplace fee of up to 7.99% of what you pay freelancers (3% for eligible US bank payments); its pricing page shows 5%, so check what your account is charged. Business Plus charges 10%. Each new contract also carries a one-time fee of $0.99 to $14.99. Freelancers pay their own service fee of 0% to 15%, which is usually built into their rates.

The larger cost of a marketplace is usually time: writing job posts, reading proposals, interviewing, onboarding each freelancer, reviewing work and starting again when someone leaves.

Data and confidentiality
Upwork offers a data processing agreement covering its own processing of personal data. Confidentiality between you and a freelancer is set by the terms you agree with them, so bring your own NDA and any processing terms you need.
Upwork's User Agreement also gives Upwork a licence to use user content, including work product, unless you opt out. If your files are sensitive, read that section before you share them.
