What changed after the 2026 election
A TVK-led government took office on 10 May 2026 and presented a revised budget on 5 August 2026. For women, that meant:
- Magalir Urimai is still ₹1,000 a month. The revised budget renamed it "Magalir Urimai Thittam". The minister said in July 2026 that ₹2,500 will come once the procedures are finalised, but the budget gave no date. About 1.31 crore women are covered.
- No new Magalir Urimai applications are open. When a round opens, it will be at e-Sevai centres or official camps, and it will be free.
- Free bus travel was renamed Magalir Vettri Payanam and, from 2 October 2026, covers Express, LSS and Deluxe city buses and ordinary Mofussil and ghat buses as well as town buses.
- Pensions and the unemployment assistance did not change. Pensions for widows, deserted wives and unmarried women stay at ₹1,200; the new government's promise of ₹3,000 is not in force.
- Announced, not open yet: a ₹5 lakh subsidy for well-run self-help group enterprises, and free goats for destitute widows and deserted women in villages.
Jobs: registration, the allowance and the women's quota
- Register with the employment exchange. Your seniority for government job sponsorship starts on that day, and you get free coaching for TNPSC, TNUSRB, TET, SSC, IBPS and RRB exams.
- After 5 years on the register, claim the unemployment assistance if you are 40 or younger (45 for SC and ST) and your family earns up to ₹72,000 a year: ₹200 to ₹600 a month for 3 years.
- If you are 18 to 35 and not working, join the Vettri skill training for free industry training with placement support.
- Claim the women's quota in government job forms. At least 30% of direct recruitment vacancies are kept for women, and women can also compete for the rest.
You may read that the women's quota is 40%. The state announced that in 2021, but official TNPSC notifications in 2025 still apply "a minimum of 30%". Go by the figure in each notification.

Questions
How do I check my Magalir Urimai status?
Go to kmut.tn.gov.in, choose public login, and enter your Aadhaar number and the OTP. If you got the approval SMS but no money, check that your bank account is linked to Aadhaar. Helpline 044-25619208.
Can I apply for Magalir Urimai now?
No. No new application window was open on 4 October 2026. The last round, in 2025, brought the total to about 1.31 crore women. Any site that takes a fee to register you is fake.
When will Magalir Urimai become ₹2,500?
There is no date yet. The minister said in July 2026 that it will come once the procedures are finalised, and the August 2026 revised budget did not announce it.
My Magalir Urimai application was rejected. What now?
Appeal within 30 days of the rejection SMS, at an e-Sevai centre, with proof that you are eligible. The appeal goes to the Revenue Divisional Officer.
Can I get the widow pension and Magalir Urimai together?
No. Families already getting a social security pension such as the widow pension are not eligible for Magalir Urimai. The widow pension pays more: ₹1,200 a month.
How do I get the unemployment assistance in Tamil Nadu?
You need 5 years on the employment register, family income up to ₹72,000 a year, and age 40 or below (45 for SC and ST). It pays ₹200 to ₹600 a month for 3 years. Apply at your District Employment and Career Guidance Centre.

Yes. From 2 October 2026 it covers Express, LSS and Deluxe government city buses and ordinary Mofussil and ghat buses. You need no card or form; take the zero-fare ticket from the conductor.
Is there a business loan with subsidy for women in Tamil Nadu?
Yes. TWEES is for women only, with no education or income limit: a bank loan for a project up to ₹10 lakh, with a 25% subsidy up to ₹2 lakh. For bigger units with +2 or more, look at NEEDS.
